Secret force

Remember, it is the secret force hidden deep within
us that manipulates our strings; there lies the
voice of persuasion, there the very life, there, we
might even say, is the man himself. Never confuse
it in your imagination with its surrounding case of
flesh, or the organs adhering thereto, which save
that they grow upon the body, are as much mere
instruments as the carpenter's axe.

Without the agency that prompts or restrains their
motions, the parts themselves are of no more service
than her shuttle to the weaver, his pen to the
writer, or his whip to the wagoner.
