Hydra, Greece - 2007
1. “A decent boldness ever meets with friends.”
2. “And what he greatly thought, he nobly dared.”
3. “Dreams surely are difficult, confusing, and not everything in them is brought to pass for mankind. For fleeting dreams have two gates: one is fashioned of horn and one of ivory. Those which pass through the one of sawn ivory are deceptive, bringing tidings which come to nought, but those which issue from the one of polished horn bring true results when a mortal sees them.”
4. “Fly, dotard, fly!
With thy wise dreams and fables of the sky.”
5. “Forget the brother and resume the man.”
6. “For love deceives the best of woman kind.”
7. “For dear to gods and men is sacred song.
Self-taught I sing; by Heaven and Heaven alone,
The genuine seed of poesy are sown.”
8. ”Hateful to me as the gates of Hades is that man who hides one thing in his heart and speaks another.”
9. “Having well polished the whole bow, he added a golden tip.”
10. “In labouring to be concise, I become obscure.”
11. “It is not strength, but art, obtains the prize,
And to be swift is less than to be wise.
'Tis more by art, than force of numerous strokes.”
12. “Just are the ways of heaven; from Heaven proceed
The woes of man: Heaven doom'd the Greeks to bleed.”
13. “Like leaves on trees the race of man is found,--
Now green in youth, now withering on the ground;
Another race the following spring supplies;
They fall successive; and successive rise.”
14. “Nothing is too high for the daring of mortals; we storm heaven itself in our folly.”
15. “Pale death, with impartial step, knocks at the hut of the poor and the towers of kings.”
16. “Money is a handmaiden, if thou knowest how to use it; a mistress, if thou knowest not.”
17. “No living man can send me to the shades
Before my time; no man of woman born,
Coward or brave, can shun his destiny.”
18. ”There is a time for many words, and there is also a time for sleep.”
19. “Thin, airy shoals of visionary ghosts.”
20. “Time will bring to light whatever is hidden; it will cover up and conceal what is now shining in splendour.”
21. “'Tis true; 'tis certain; man though dead retains
Part of himself; the immortal mind remains.”
22. “To have begun is to have done half the task; dare to be wise.”
23. “Urge him with truth to frame his fair replies;
And sure he will; for wisdom never lies.”
24. “Who dares think one thing, and another tell,
My heart detests him as the gates of hell.”
25. “Who hearkens to the gods, the gods give ear.”
26. “Who loves too much, hate in the like extreme.”
27. “Wise to resolve, and patient to perform.”
