Merit

The merit of the mind does not reside so much in its being learned (the reference books are always at hand) as in its being lively--vital enough to adapt its knowledge and principles to whatever is new or unique, and, inversely, quick to sense how it can derive nourishment from each and every thing chance brings its way.
